The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) says steps are being taken to ban the sale of unpacked coconut oil in the local market.
Acting Director General of the Consumer Affairs Authority Samantha Karunasena made the statement while appearing before a subcommittee of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE).
She said the measure is being considered due to concerns over the adulteration of low-quality coconut oil with other types of oil in the market.
A Gazette notification has been drafted in this regard and is expected to be issued in the future, she said.
Under the proposed requirements, coconut oil packaging will have to carry labels containing information such as the name of the product, weight, expiry date, batch number and details of the manufacturer.
She further stated that the Consumer Affairs Authority is also working with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) to maintain the required quality standards for coconut oil available in the local market.
