Sri Lanka expects to complete its four-year programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the second half of 2027, Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has said.
He said there is confidence that Sri Lanka can continue implementing the economic reforms under the IMF programme despite increased global economic uncertainties.
Speaking to Bloomberg Television’s ‘The Asia Trade’ programme, the Central Bank Governor said the next review of the IMF programme is expected to take place in November or December this year.
Following the successful completion of that review, Sri Lanka is expected to complete the four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme by the second half of 2027, he said.
In May, the IMF Executive Board completed the fifth and sixth reviews of Sri Lanka’s programme jointly, allowing the country to access nearly US$695 million.
Accordingly, the total amount disbursed to Sri Lanka under the IMF programme so far is close to US$2 billion.
The IMF programme has played a key role in stabilising Sri Lanka’s economy following the severe economic crisis in 2022. The country has implemented a range of reforms covering public finances, monetary policy, governance and structural reforms.
Despite challenges in the global economic environment and various external and domestic pressures, Dr. Weerasinghe said reforms under the IMF programme are progressing as planned.
