New Safety Standard for Liquid Milk

Sri Lanka's Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has introduced new regulations setting the maximum permissible aflatoxin limit for all processed liquid milk sold in the country.

The regulation, issued under Section 12(2) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003, has been published through an Extraordinary Gazette and will come into effect on January 8, 2027.

Under the new rules, the production, importation, sale or distribution of processed liquid milk exceeding the prescribed aflatoxin limit will be prohibited.

The regulation applies to the entire supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, packers, suppliers, warehouse operators, distributors, transporters, and wholesale and retail traders.

According to the Gazette, the maximum allowable aflatoxin level in processed liquid milk is 0.5 µg/kg (0.5 ppb), in line with the SLS 1815 standard issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI).

The CAA said compliance with the new standard will be mandatory for all parties involved in the liquid milk supply chain from January 8, 2027, to ensure food safety and consumer protection.
