The Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development plans to complete four major infrastructure projects in Kandy within the next two years under the Central Province Development Programme.

The projects include the Gatambe Flyover, Mahaiyawa Underpass, William Gopallawa Mawatha expansion and Lewis Peiris Mawatha development. They are aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving urban connectivity in Kandy.

A progress review and field inspection of the projects were conducted on July 15, 2026, with the participation of Minister K.D. Lalkantha and Deputy Minister Dr. Prasanna Gunasena.

The Government stated that the projects will be completed within the targeted two-year period while preserving Kandy's historical and cultural significance.
