People’s Struggle Movement activist Wasantha Mudalige has alleged that information obtained through ChatGPT was used without adequate review in preparing tender documents for the procurement of 500 body cameras for Police officers.
Speaking at a media briefing, Mudalige claimed that information generated through artificial intelligence tools had been used to prepare the Terms of Reference (TOR), including the technical specifications of the body cameras and the requirements of the procurement.
He further alleged that the AI-generated information had been incorporated into the tender documents without proper technical review or necessary revisions.
Mudalige said the Police procurement division had called for tenders in March to procure 500 body cameras and 70 docking stations for Police and security personnel.
He explained that body cameras can be worn by Police officers during raids and other operations to record video footage, which could subsequently be used as evidence.
Against the backdrop of concerns over deaths in Police custody and alleged violence inside Police stations, Mudalige said the introduction of body cameras, along with CCTV cameras inside Police stations, was an important measure.
However, he said the concern was not with the decision to introduce body cameras but with the manner in which the procurement process was being conducted.
He alleged that the tender contained shortcomings in its technical specifications and warned that such issues could affect the proper use of the cameras. He also alleged that the procurement process had been structured in a manner that could favour a particular party.
Mudalige therefore called for the ongoing tender process to be cancelled and for a new procurement process to be initiated following a proper technical review and consultation with experts.
