The Consumer Affairs Authority has launched a special islandwide inspection and investigation programme targeting the sale of underweight bread and the failure to properly display the weight and price of bread.
During the special operation conducted on September 29, a total of 107 shops and bakeries were inspected.
The operation identified 35 cases involving the sale of underweight bread, 85 locations where the weight of bread was not displayed, and 55 locations where the price of bread was not displayed. A total of 71 bakeries were also inspected during the operation.
The Consumer Affairs Authority said officers have been instructed to extend investigations beyond retailers to the bakeries that produced the bread whenever underweight bread is found.
The weight of bread produced at the relevant bakeries will also be checked. If an offence is confirmed, the bakery will be instructed to immediately rectify its production process. Where sufficient evidence is available, legal action will be initiated before the Magistrate’s Court, the Authority said.
Earlier, during an inspection conducted from September 1 to 3, a total of 118 shops and bakeries were inspected, with 54 cases involving underweight bread identified.
Accordingly, the two inspection programmes have resulted in a total of 225 shops and bakeries being inspected, with 89 cases involving underweight bread reported.
