Sri Lankan sprint star Yupun Abeykoon has denied allegations that he demanded US$300,000 from the government as a condition to continue representing Sri Lanka.

Responding to recent remarks by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, Abeykoon said the amount was not a condition for competing for Sri Lanka but related to long-outstanding payments and commitments made by previous governments.

He explained that the request covered unpaid financial commitments dating back to 2021, including payments owed to him and his support team, following years of discussions with successive authorities.

Abeykoon said he had merely asked the Minister to help resolve the issue, which has remained unsettled for more than four years.

He also expressed disappointment that the Minister's public comments had created the impression that he represented Sri Lanka only for financial gain.

The athlete stressed that he has never been involved in politics and chose to represent Sri Lanka despite having the opportunity to pursue Italian citizenship.

Abeykoon further said his decision to retire from athletics was driven by years of unresolved issues and frustration with the system, not because the government refused to meet any financial demand.
