Sri Lanka’s tourism revenue fell by 11.5% during the first seven months of this year compared with the corresponding period last year, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has announced.
According to Central Bank data, tourism revenue declined from US$2,031.1 million between January and July last year to US$1,796.7 million during the same period this year.
Tourism revenue also fell from US$318.5 million in July last year to US$285.5 million in July this year.
However, remittances sent to Sri Lanka by citizens working overseas recorded a significant increase during the period.
Remittances rose sharply from US$4,435.2 million during the first seven months of last year to US$8,382.4 million during the corresponding period this year.
Meanwhile, monthly remittances increased from US$697.3 million in July last year to US$777.6 million in July this year, according to the Central Bank.
