The Sri Lanka Police have introduced a special security and traffic plan for the third Kumbal Perahera of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera.
The third Kumbal Perahera, scheduled for August 20, 2026, will begin from the Sri Dalada Maligawa at 6:53 p.m. and proceed along Dalada Veediya, D.S. Senanayake Street, Colombo Street, Kotugodella Street and Raja Veediya before returning to the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
The total distance of the procession route is 1.25 kilometres.
Special arrangements will be implemented during the procession, including roadblocks, security duties, vehicle and person checks, guidance for tourists and vehicle parking arrangements.
Heavy vehicles travelling from Katugastota towards Kandy city can use the route via Mahaiyawa Junction, Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha and Police Junction. Several alternative routes have also been designated for light vehicles.
Vehicles arriving from Thanne Kumbura and Ampitiya can use Sangharaja Mawatha, Wales Park Junction and Ehelepola Kumarihamy Mawatha. Vehicles travelling between Colombo and Kandy can use William Gopallawa Mawatha and the Old Peradeniya Road.
Police have requested motorists and the public to follow the designated traffic arrangements during the procession.
