Australia has introduced new restrictions on international students bringing family members to the country.
Under the new rules, most international students will no longer be able to bring their spouse, partner or children to Australia under their student visa. Exceptions will apply to students from Pacific and ASEAN countries and those undertaking certain courses, including PhD programs.
Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke formally announced the new migration measures today (17).
The government is also tightening rules governing temporary visa holders who seek to switch to other visa categories.
Australia is targeting a reduction in net overseas migration to 225,000 people by 2028.
