More than 2,700 MW of electricity generation capacity from solar, wind and battery power is expected to be added to the national grid between 2027 and 2029, Minister of Power and Energy Anura Karunatilaka said.
Speaking in Parliament today (11), the Minister said plans are in place to add 1,392 MW of solar power, 370 MW of wind power and 1,000 MW of battery power during the period.
He also noted that electricity generation from rooftop solar panels has recorded significant growth in recent years.
The Minister pointed out that excess electricity generation occurs at certain times, particularly on Sundays and public holidays.
As a result, solar power generation sometimes has to be curtailed to maintain the stability of the electricity grid, he said.
However, with the introduction of battery energy storage systems, the government expects to store excess electricity generated during the daytime and distribute it during the night, the Minister added.
