Trump Moves to Restrict Birthright Citizenship

US President Donald Trump has signed two new executive orders aimed at restricting the “Birthright Citizenship” policy, which automatically grants citizenship to children born in the United States.

The move comes weeks after the Trump administration’s previous attempt to limit birthright citizenship was rejected by the US Supreme Court, according to foreign media reports.

Under the new orders, definitions have been introduced to deny automatic citizenship to children born to members of foreign terrorist organisations, employees of foreign governments, individuals attempting to fraudulently obtain citizenship, and certain people residing in US territories where citizenship is not legally granted.

Trump has also issued an order to end “Birth Tourism”, where pregnant women travel to the US on tourist visas with the intention of giving birth and securing American citizenship for their children.

However, legal experts have raised concerns that removing citizenship rights of children born in the US through an executive order could face serious constitutional challenges.

Foreign media reports that the new executive orders are also likely to face legal challenges in courts.
