UAE Honours Pilot Who Saved Hundreds

Captain Smit Machhar, the pilot who risked his life to save hundreds of passengers during a security incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, has received high praise from the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Defence, recently visited the hospital and inquired about Captain Machhar, who is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Deputy Prime Minister said Captain Machhar was an outstanding pilot who demonstrated exceptional courage, a strong sense of responsibility and an unwavering commitment to human life.

He further said that Captain Machhar has earned the respect and praise of the UAE leadership, adding that the nation is proud to have such a hero serving as part of its national airline.

On September 30, Captain Machhar was reportedly attacked with an axe used for emergencies by the co-pilot inside the cockpit of Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

According to preliminary investigations by the UAE Attorney General, the co-pilot attempted to take control of the aircraft and carry out an act of terrorism.

Despite suffering serious injuries in the attack, Captain Machhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing the crew and passengers to immediately enter the cockpit and overpower the attacker.

The aircraft was subsequently brought back under control and safely landed at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority said the quick and intelligent response of the captain, other crew members and passengers helped avert a major disaster.

Following initial treatment in Tabuk, Captain Machhar, an Indian national, was brought back to the UAE for further medical treatment.

The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi has confirmed that he is currently hospitalised and in very good health.

Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by a special investigation team in the UAE.
