Hundreds of supporters of India’s youth-led ‘Cockroach Movement’ launched a protest march towards Parliament in New Delhi today (20), despite police restrictions.

The protesters demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him responsible for repeated examination paper leak incidents.

The movement is being described as one of the biggest public challenges faced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government during its third term in office. It has gained widespread attention through social media platforms.

The ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) movement reportedly began after the leakage of question papers in the national medical entrance examination held in May, which affected more than two million students.

The situation intensified after activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike, was forcibly admitted to a hospital by police last Saturday.

As Parliament’s monsoon session began today, large crowds gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Riot control police and paramilitary forces were deployed to maintain security and control the situation.

Political observers say Indian youth are increasingly frustrated over high unemployment rates and examination irregularities.
