A Singapore court has fined a 19-year-old French student 600 Singapore dollars for taking a straw from an orange juice vending machine, licking it, and placing it back in the distribution box.

Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien pleaded guilty to causing public nuisance.

The student, who is studying in Singapore, uploaded an Instagram video showing him taking the straw and putting it in his mouth with the caption “The city is not safe.” The video went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism from the public.

Following the incident, iJooce, the company operating the vending machine, said that all 500 straws inside the machine were replaced as a precaution.

Under Singapore law, those found guilty of causing public nuisance can face a fine of up to S$2,000, imprisonment of up to three months, or both.

Both the prosecution and the defence requested the court to impose a fine. His lawyer said Maximilien was genuinely remorseful and realised that what he considered a joke had resulted in serious consequences.
