Reports circulating on social media claiming that the four-year-old girl rescued after being abandoned by the roadside in the Wattegama area of Kandy has died are false, according to a fact check.
Over the past few days, posts claiming that the girl had died, accompanied by her photographs, have been widely circulated on social media.
However, inquiries made with the Wattegama Police confirmed that the girl is alive and continues to receive treatment at the Kandy National Hospital. Police also stated that her condition is not life-threatening.
Kandy National Hospital has also confirmed that the girl remains under treatment.
The girl was previously rescued after being found abandoned in the Wattegama area and was admitted to hospital with injuries. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while two suspects have reportedly been arrested and remanded in custody.
The public is therefore urged not to believe or share unverified social media posts claiming that the girl has died.
