The final day of the parliamentary debate on the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill is being held today (25).
Accordingly, the vote on the relevant Bills is scheduled to be held at 7.00 p.m. today.
The Second Reading debate on the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill commenced yesterday (24).
Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament on September 22 of the Supreme Court’s determination on the two Bills.
The Supreme Court determined that the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill does not require approval at a referendum. The Bill can proceed through Parliament with the required majority.
The Supreme Court also determined that the Judicature (Amendment) Bill is not inconsistent with the Constitutionand may be passed by a simple majority in Parliament.
