A Ugandan national who allegedly arrived in Sri Lanka after swallowing around 90 cocaine capsules worth more than Rs. 50 million has been arrested by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Unit at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.
The suspect is a 43-year-old Ugandan national who works as a farmer.
He had allegedly swallowed the cocaine capsules before travelling from Entebbe in Uganda via Doha, Qatar. He subsequently arrived at Katunayake Airport yesterday morning (13) on Qatar Airways flight QR-664.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect had remained on the first floor of the airport until yesterday afternoon.
The raid was carried out based on confidential intelligence received by the Customs Narcotics Control Unit. During the operation, the suspect naturally expelled 13 of the cocaine capsules he had swallowed while still inside the airport.
Steps have been taken to admit the suspect to Negombo Base Hospital to facilitate the complete expulsion of the remaining cocaine capsules allegedly concealed in his stomach.
The suspect has been handed over to officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau at Katunayake Airport for further investigations.
