The Supreme Court has determined that the Bill to Establish the Chartered Institute of Media Studies of Sri Lankamust be passed in Parliament with a special two-thirds majority, as certain provisions of the Bill are inconsistent with the Constitution, Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament.
Parliament convened yesterday (08) at 9.30 a.m. under the chairmanship of Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, with the Speaker’s announcements being taken up as part of the proceedings.
The Speaker informed the House of the Supreme Court’s determination regarding the Bill presented to Parliament to establish the Chartered Institute of Media Studies of Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, the Speaker stated that the Supreme Court had determined that certain provisions of the Bill were inconsistent with the Constitution and, therefore, the Bill would have to be passed by a special two-thirds majority in Parliament.
However, the Supreme Court’s determination also states that if the amendments recommended by the Court are incorporated into the Bill, it could be passed by a simple majority in Parliament, the Speaker further informed the House.
