Two Indian nationals have been arrested with a consignment of cigarettes brought into Sri Lanka without paying customs duty at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake today (25).
The suspects were arrested during a raid conducted by a team of officers attached to the Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau at the airport's arrival terminal in the early hours of today.
A total of 55,600 cigarettes contained in 278 cartons, which had been brought into the country without paying customs duty, were seized during the operation.
The suspects, aged 33 and 38, are Indian nationals, police said.
Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau.
