Police have announced a special security and traffic plan for the annual Esala Perahera of the Devinuwara Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya in the Gandara Police Division.
The festival, which began on July 14, will continue until August 5, 2026. The first Peli Perahera commenced on July 23, while the Kavadi Perahera will be held on July 28 and the Randoli Perahera and final grand procession on July 29.
Police said traffic congestion is expected along the Colombo–Kataragama main road between 4.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m. on July 28 and 29. Motorists travelling between Matara and Tangalle are advised to use the designated alternative routes.
More than 750 security personnel, including 650 police officers, 100 Special Task Force (STF) officers, and intelligence officers, will be deployed to ensure public safety, security, and traffic management during the event.
