A student named Sahan Kumara Athukorala has filed a case before the Nugegoda District Court seeking Rs. 5 million in compensation from the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Finance at the University of Colombo and several others.
In his petition, the student alleges that he was failed in his university final examination after he refused to pay Rs. 80,000 allegedly requested from him by a university lecturer through another student.
He further claims that although he and several other students had initially been informed that they had failed, some of those students were later declared to have passed without sitting another examination, following which a convocation was also held.
The student states that he questioned the authorities as to how students who had initially failed could be declared successful without being given another examination. However, he claims that he has not received a clear explanation regarding the matter.
He has therefore told the court that the circumstances appear to indicate that examination irregularities may have occurred.
The plaintiff, who studied for the Higher Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (2022/2023) conducted by the Faculty of Management and Finance of the University of Colombo, filed the case through Attorney-at-Law Danosha Perera.
