Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa has not been formally charged, has not been served an indictment and has not faced a trial, the party’s General Secretary, Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam, has claimed.
He alleged that Namal Rajapaksa had been kept in custody without following any of these legal procedures.
Kariyawasam made the remarks while attending a conference organised under the theme “Let Us Rise for Justice.”
He said that under a fair legal process, an investigation should be conducted, the allegations should be explained, an indictment should be served and a trial should be held before an accused person can be punished based on evidence. He alleged that none of these procedures had been followed in Namal Rajapaksa’s case.
Kariyawasam also made allegations concerning Ranga Dissanayake, the Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
He claimed that former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna General Secretary Nandana Gunathilaka had alleged that Dissanayake had political links and had stated that he possessed written evidence to support the claim.
Kariyawasam said that if such allegations were false, legal action should have been taken against them, but alleged that no such action had been taken.
He also referred to the death of Nandana Gunathilaka and an alleged affidavit submitted to court by an individual against the Director General of the Bribery Commission.
However, these are allegations and claims made by Sagara Kariyawasam at the conference and should not be treated as independently verified facts.
