The total water storage capacity of reservoirs across Sri Lanka is currently close to 47.3% due to the prevailing dry weather, according to H.M.P.S.D. Herath, Director of Irrigation (Water Management) at the Irrigation Department.
He said the water storage level in the major reservoirs managed by the Irrigation Department is currently around 34.4%.
Meanwhile, the water levels in reservoirs in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts are close to 20%, he said.
However, as the Yala cultivation season has now reached its final stage, the available water is expected to be sufficient for the remainder of the season, according to Herath.
He also said the existing water reserves are expected to be sufficient to meet the drinking water requirements of areas dependent on these reservoirs until the next rainfall.
As high temperatures in several parts of the country have increased water losses through evaporation from reservoirs, Herath urged the public to use water sparingly for agricultural activities and drinking water needs.
He further stated that plans for the upcoming Maha cultivation season are currently being prepared. Depending on decisions reached at seasonal cultivation meetings and the water levels available at the time, authorities plan to commence the Maha season as soon as possible.
