A suspected organised criminal who was the subject of a Red Notice, along with two other suspects, has been arrested in Malaysia and brought back to Sri Lanka.
The main suspect was arrested in an operation conducted by officers of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force with the assistance of Malaysian police and Interpol. He was brought to Sri Lanka by air yesterday (10) evening.
The main suspect is a 41-year-old resident of Ratmalana. Investigations have revealed that he had also temporarily resided in the Peradeniya and Tissamaharama areas.
Police said he is an accused in two cases being heard before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court in connection with the abduction and assault of a person using firearms in the Peradeniya Police Division in 2014 and the shooting and killing of another person in the same police division in 2016.
Open warrants had been issued against him after he failed to appear before court in connection with the cases.
He was also previously arrested in connection with a robbery in the Mount Lavinia Police Division in 2003, for which a case was filed before the Colombo High Court. In 2007, he was arrested by Mount Lavinia Police for allegedly possessing a hand grenade.
Two other individuals who were with the main suspect when he was arrested in Malaysia were also taken into custody. They are a 35-year-old resident of Ratmalana and a 31-year-old resident of Mount Lavinia. Both suspects have also been brought to Sri Lanka for further investigations.
Further investigations into the suspects are to be conducted under the instructions and direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police.
