Recent shooting incidents were carried out entirely with the intention of killing witnesses, Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara has claimed.
He made the statement while attending the “Adhittana” gathering in Kalutara yesterday (23), which was attended by retired members of the tri-forces representing the National People’s Power.
The Deputy Minister said the government had brought 58 major criminals back to Sri Lanka from overseas in recent times after Red Notices had been issued against them. He claimed that the suspects had been living luxurious lives abroad, with vehicles and even helicopters, and alleged that some politicians had maintained close associations with them during visits to those countries.
He further claimed that opposition groups were behaving in this manner because of the success of the government’s operations.
The Deputy Minister also said the rule of law had previously deteriorated in the country and that not just one political group, but several groups, had been removed from power.
He said the government had taken over a country that had been economically devastated and was moving it forward with financial discipline. He added that revenue was being properly collected across all sectors and that the country’s economic situation had improved.
Sri Lanka had made significant economic progress over the past 15 months and had entered the group of countries recording high economic growth, he further stated.
