A 34-year-old pregnant woman has been arrested by Monaragala Police for allegedly attempting to take crystal methamphetamine (Ice) to her husband who is currently detained at the Monaragala Prison.
The suspect, a resident of Karambagodayaya in Siyambalanduwa, had visited Monaragala to meet her husband and purchased a pair of slippers from a shop in the town.
After leaving the shop, a person who noticed her removing the sole of the slippers informed the police post located in Monaragala town.
Acting on the information, police officers searched the woman and found a torch charger in her handbag. Upon examining the charger, officers discovered a packet of Ice concealed inside the slippers.
Police said the package contained 12,400 milligrams of Ice, which was taken into custody.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly revealed that she had brought the drugs to give them to her husband, who is currently in prison over a drug-related offence.
The suspect and the seized drugs are scheduled to be produced before the Monaragala Magistrate’s Court.
Monaragala Headquarters Police Inspector Chaminda de Silva stated that necessary medical and health facilities have been arranged as the suspect is a pregnant woman.
The operation was carried out by a team of officers including Sub Inspector Dayananda of the Monaragala Town Police Post.
