A complaint has been lodged with the Moratuwa Police over the alleged illegal release of a locally produced Sinhala film on social media.
The Film Producers’ Association filed the complaint against an individual who allegedly shared a film produced by filmmaker Janitha Marasinghe through Facebook and Telegram.
Speaking to the media, Film Producers’ Association Chairman Rasith Jinaseena said the unauthorised distribution of such films was not a minor legal violation but a serious offence.
He further said that if the law was strictly enforced, it would even be possible to recover the financial losses caused by the offence from the person responsible.
Police investigations have revealed that the suspect involved in the incident is an 18-year-old school student residing in the Koralawella area.
However, based on a mutual agreement between the two parties, the student was strongly warned and the matter was settled.
The Film Producers’ Association further said it would continue working to prevent the illegal distribution of films and to strengthen and strictly enforce existing laws against such offences.
