Over Rs. 225 Mn Damage to Five Prisons

More than Rs. 225 million worth of property damage has reportedly been caused by unrest that occurred in five prisons in Negombo, Mahara, Magazine, Pallansena and Kuruwita in recent days.

The information was revealed at the ‘Rata Ma Ekata’ National Operations Council meeting held yesterday (10) under the chairmanship of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The current situation in the prisons was reviewed extensively during the meeting. It was also decided to actively seek the services of psychiatrists in the future to help manage disruptive behaviour among inmates.

The unrest, which began at the Negombo Prison on July 05 and 06, later spread to the Mahara Prison on August 01 and the Colombo New Magazine Prison on August 06.

Similar confrontational situations were also reported at the Kuruwita Prison and the Pallansena Youth Offenders’ Correctional Centre on August 07.

It was further revealed at the meeting that the Negombo and Mahara prisons had suffered the most severe property damage among the facilities affected.
