The three-member High Court bench is scheduled to deliver its order tomorrow on a request by former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal seeking his release without further recording of evidence.
The request was made in a case involving allegations that the government suffered a loss of Rs. 1.8 billion as a result of investing funds in Greek bonds. Cabraal has argued that the prosecution has failed to establish the allegations against him.
The request was made by President’s Counsel Dilan Ratnayake when the case was taken up before the three-member High Court bench comprising Manoj Talgodapitiya, who presides over the bench, and Justices Udesh Ranatunga and Buddhika Sri Ragala.
President’s Counsel Ratnayake told court that the transaction was a legitimate investment and that no criminal liability had been established against Cabraal.
He also pointed out that this was the fourth occasion on which charges had been filed against his client based on the same allegations.
Deputy Director of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Anusha Sambandanperuma, appeared for the prosecution.
