An open verdict has been returned following the post-mortem examination into the death of former Hambantota Mayor Erage Fernando.
The post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday by the Colombo Senior Judicial Medical Officer.
Following the examination, the Judicial Medical Officer ordered that samples obtained from the body be forwarded to the Government Analyst for further investigations and examinations.
The 61-year-old former mayor was found dead on the morning of September 2 inside a residence on the eighth floor of an apartment complex in the Thimbirigasyaya area.
Police said preliminary investigations suggest that Fernando may have been found hanging from a tie attached to a door near a room in the residence.
Another individual had reportedly been residing at the apartment and had travelled to the Hambantota area on the previous day. When he was unable to contact Fernando by telephone the following morning, he reportedly asked a woman who carried out cleaning work at the residence to check the house.
Police said the woman subsequently discovered Fernando’s body.
