The Mahanayake Theras have not yet received a response from the President to the letter sent regarding the proposed amendment to extend the retirement age of judges, the Mahanayake Thera of the Malwathu Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya, Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera, said.
He made the statement while meeting representatives of a human rights organisation in Kandy.
The Mahanayake Thera noted that the Maha Sangha had, since the past, provided both verbal and written advice to rulers on matters of national importance.
He said that on previous occasions, at least an acknowledgement confirming receipt of such letters had been sent. However, no response has been received regarding the current matter, and they have not even been informed whether the letter was received.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the organisation, Subhashana Subbawickrama, said that judges in many countries continue to serve beyond the age of 60, and therefore extending the retirement age of judges in Sri Lanka should not be an issue.
