Attention has been focused on allocating funds through the 2027 Budget to implement a new programme aimed at completing housing projects that have been abandoned midway.

Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe revealed this during the Ministry Consultative Committee meeting.

The Minister stated that nearly 5,000 housing projects have been left incomplete due to various reasons.

A five-member committee headed jointly by two former ministry secretaries has been appointed to identify houses that are in a usable condition among these projects and provide recommendations on future action.

The Minister said the committee is currently collecting information, identifying relevant houses and preparing recommendations regarding the next steps.

He further stated that assistance will be provided next year to families who require support to complete partially constructed houses, with around 2,000 families expected to benefit from the programme.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has also agreed to hold a special meeting with the participation of all relevant stakeholders to discuss housing issues, including housing projects for low-income families in the Colombo District.
