Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa is scheduled to appear before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (16), with police reportedly taking steps to strengthen security at and around the court premises.
The case was filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) under money laundering laws in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the process of procuring aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
Namal Rajapaksa was named as a suspect in the case on the instructions of the Attorney General, and the Fort Magistrate had earlier ordered that he be produced before court today.
Rajapaksa was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on September 4 over allegations that he accepted a bribe of approximately Rs. 100 million in connection with the Airbus aircraft transaction.
He is currently in remand custody until September 18 following the court order issued after his arrest.
