Public Administration Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne says it is unacceptable for Grama Niladhari trade unions to engage in industrial action despite the government taking steps to address their professional issues, including the fuel allowance.
He said the government had identified several issues raised by Grama Niladhari trade unions during discussions and had agreed to address them through the upcoming Budget after discussions with the President, the Ministry Secretary and the Minister of Finance.
The minister said these plans had also been explained to the trade union leaders.
However, the Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance launched industrial action yesterday (10) and today (11), citing several demands including the fuel allowance.
As a result, members of the public who visited Grama Niladhari offices to obtain services have faced difficulties.
Meanwhile, Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance Chairman Nandana Ranasinghe said steps would be taken to intensify the trade union action, claiming that no solution had yet been provided for their demands.
He said the trade union action could be temporarily suspended if the government provided an interim allowance until the proposed allowance is granted through the Budget.
He further stated that, alternatively, the Ministry Secretary could issue a circular limiting the field duties of Grama Niladharis to reduce additional travel expenses. If neither solution is provided, the industrial action will continue.
