Man Arrested by TID for Spreading False Information

A man who allegedly spread false information without verification by releasing a video on social media and holding a media briefing has been arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID).

The Police Media Division stated that the arrest was made yesterday (18).

According to police, the suspect had made false and unverified claims on social media that a training camp belonging to the LTTE was being operated within the Palai Reserve in the Akkarayankulam Police Division.

TID officers launched an investigation into an alleged attempt to create public unrest through the dissemination of the information and subsequently arrested the suspect.

The suspect is a 46-year-old resident of Bellanwila, Boralesgamuwa.

Legal action is to be taken against him under the Penal Code and the Police Ordinance, police said.

The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today.
