The Irrigation Department says the water stored in the country’s major reservoirs is currently close to 45% of their capacity.
Irrigation Director and Water Management Engineer at the Irrigation Department, H.M.P.H.S.D. Herath, said the water capacity of reservoirs managed by the Irrigation Department is currently close to 33%.
He also said the water level in reservoirs in the Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Mannar districts is currently close to 20%.
However, as the Yala cultivation season has now reached its final stage, the available water is sufficient for agricultural activities, he said.
He further stated that no drinking water shortage is expected in areas that obtain drinking water from these reservoirs.
Plans have also been prepared for agricultural activities during the upcoming Maha season. He said it was decided at the relevant seasonal meetings to commence Maha cultivation activities in the Ampara District tomorrow (15).
Meanwhile, plans are being prepared to commence cultivation activities in other irrigation schemes during the Maha season based on the water levels in the reservoirs and rainfall forecasts. He added that cultivation activities in many irrigation schemes have been scheduled to begin tomorrow.
