The Irrigation Department has warned of a possible major flood situation in areas along the Mahaweli River within the next 48 hours.
The warning was issued due to heavy rainfall recorded in the upper catchment areas of the Mahaweli River during the past few hours, forecasts of further rainfall, and the possibility of opening the spill gates of the Kotmale Reservoir.
The alert applies to low-lying areas located along the banks of the Mahaweli River within the relevant Divisional Secretariat divisions.
Residents living in low-lying areas near the river have been urged to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to protect themselves from possible flood impacts.
Disaster management authorities have also been instructed to take necessary precautionary actions.
As more rainfall is expected, the public has been advised to remain alert and closely monitor the developing situation.
