The Ministry of Education has taken a major decision to change the assessment and examination system that has been in place in Sri Lankan schools.
The proposed changes were discussed at a meeting of the Subcommittee on Education Reforms held in Parliament under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
Accordingly, 50% of a student’s final marks will be determined through continuous assessments conducted throughout the year, while the remaining 50% will be based on term examinations.
The existing GPA (Grade Point Average) system is also set to be replaced by a ‘weighted average marks’ system, under which final marks will be calculated according to the nature of each subject.
Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa said the National Curriculum Framework for General Education in Sri Lanka, the 2026 Concept Paper, and the School-Level Assessment and Certification Framework are expected to be submitted to the Cabinet in the future.
The new reforms are currently being implemented for Grade 1, while implementation for Grades 2 and 6 is planned to begin in 2027.
