Representatives of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka have arrived at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss the proposal to extend the retirement age of judges.
The meeting is being held following an invitation extended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
The Cabinet recently approved a constitutional amendment aimed at extending the retirement age of judges of the superior courts, amid opposition from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, several opposition political parties, civil society organisations and international legal organisations.
Accordingly, the Bill relating to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was published in the Gazette last Friday.
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka had recently informed the President in writing of its position regarding the proposal to extend the retirement age of judges.
During a meeting with Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, the Bar Association had also requested an opportunity to discuss the matter with the President.
Accordingly, the meeting between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and representatives of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka is being held to discuss the proposal to extend the retirement age of judges.
