The public should not have unnecessary fears that the proposed Animal Welfare Bill will have an impact on the Kandy Esala Perahera or any other traditional cultural festivals in Sri Lanka, Central Province Governor Dr. Harsha Suranga Fernando said.
Speaking after assuming duties as Governor, Dr. Fernando said that although Cabinet approval had been granted for the Animal Welfare Bill, its provisions would not seek to obstruct cultural festivals in any way.
He explained that the proposed legislation includes specific provisions relating to elephants and other animals, but would not impose restrictions on sacred cultural events such as the Kandy Esala Perahera.
The Governor also said there was no need to create unnecessary fear or controversy over the Bill based on views being spread by certain groups with negative attitudes.
He assured that the Kandy Esala Perahera is a world-renowned cultural festival and that no traditional element of the event would be reduced or affected.
He further stated that while ensuring animal welfare, the proposed legislation would also contribute to protecting and further developing Sri Lanka’s cultural festivals.
