Jaffna Hospital Fined Rs. 3 Million for Excess FBC Charges

Venus Speciality Hospital (Pvt) Ltd in Jaffna has been fined Rs. 3 million for charging customers above the government-approved price for FBC (Full Blood Count) tests.

According to regulations imposed by the Consumer Affairs Authority, private laboratories and hospitals are permitted to charge a maximum of Rs. 400 for an FBC test.

However, it was revealed that the hospital located in Kandar Moddam, Palaly Road, Jaffna, had charged customers Rs. 550 per FBC test.

The illegal overcharging was detected during a special raid conducted by officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority on 13 July 2026.

Following the discovery, legal action was filed against the hospital at the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court. When the case was taken up on 21 July 2026, the hospital management pleaded guilty to the offence.

Considering the facts, the Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs. 3 million on the hospital and ordered the institution to publish a notice regarding the offence in leading newspapers at its own expense.
