Intelligence authorities have uncovered information about a plan by an organised group to create clashes in five more prisons and cause major unrest across the country, according to a report published by the Divaina newspaper.
The report further stated that information has emerged indicating the same organised group may be behind the clashes that occurred at the Negombo and Mahara prisons.
According to intelligence sources, there are alleged plans to create disturbances at Dumbara, Kalutara, Galle, Colombo Magazine and Welikada Women’s prisons.
The report stated that information has been received regarding the involvement of several politicians, senior prison officials and a group of inmates in a plan to create unrest within prisons and destabilise the country.
A broad investigation into the matter is currently underway, according to sources.
The clash at Mahara Prison caused property damage exceeding Rs. 150 million. Investigators suspect that the incident may have been orchestrated by the organised group, as the exact cause of the clash has not yet been established.
