Five suspects, including the son of former State Minister Shantha Bandara, who were arrested and remanded over the alleged robbery of Rs. 20 million belonging to a Chinese national, have been released on bail.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasinghe issued the order yesterday (27).

The Magistrate ordered the release of each suspect on two surety bails worth Rs. 20 million each and imposed a foreign travel ban on them.

The suspects arrested by officers of the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau include Anuda Janadith Samarakoon Bandara, son of the former State Minister, Ajith Priyantha, Dushan Shyamal, Pramil Kusal Gunadasa, and a Chinese national identified as Wan Quin.

Investigators informed the court that further inquiries are being conducted into the suspects’ phone records, bank transactions, and cryptocurrency accounts to determine whether they were involved in similar activities previously.

Police also revealed that investigations are underway to arrest another suspect connected to the incident and to locate the vehicle allegedly used in the robbery.

Investigations have revealed that the Chinese complainant, who reported the loss of Rs. 20 million, has already left the country.

Police have also launched a separate investigation into how the Chinese national obtained the money.
