A high-level European Union delegation is scheduled to visit the Chemmani mass grave excavation site in Jaffna on Wednesday (23), following the recovery of 423 human skeletons during ongoing excavations.

The delegation, led by European Union Ambassador to Sri Lanka Carmen Moreno, will include the ambassadors of Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

A request seeking court approval for the observation visit was submitted during the recent hearing of the Chemmani mass grave case before the Jaffna Magistrate's Court.

Excavations, which began in February after human skeletal remains were discovered during excavation work near a cemetery, are being conducted under the supervision of the Jaffna Magistrate's Court with the participation of archaeologists, forensic medical officials and members of the Jaffna Bar Association.

As of Friday (17), investigators had identified 11 additional sets of human remains, bringing the total number of skeletons recovered from the site to 423.
