Drug Traffickers Face Death Penalty? Minister Responds

Proposals to impose the death penalty on individuals involved in drug trafficking, raised at the “Rataama Ekata” National Operations Centre, were discussed at the Cabinet decision press briefing held today (11).

Commenting on the matter, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said no final decision or agreement had yet been reached on imposing the death penalty on drug traffickers.

The minister said proposals had been put forward by certain parties at the “Rataama Ekata” National Operations Council calling for the death penalty to be imposed on drug traffickers.

However, he stressed that there is still no final conclusion or agreement on how such a measure would be implemented.

He further explained that the proposal was one of several suggestions put forward by different parties during discussions on activities linked to organised crime, drug trafficking and related issues.
