Nearly 8,000 acres of cultivated land have been affected by the prevailing dry weather conditions, according to the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board.
Board Chairman Premasiri Jasingarachchi said the crop damage has affected nearly 7,000 farmers.
Information has been received that farmland in several districts, including Monaragala, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, Anuradhapura and Puttalam, has been damaged due to the prevailing dry conditions.
The Chairman said authorities are currently inspecting the affected farmland and assessing the extent of the damage.
Compensation for the crop losses is expected to be provided before the end of the current cultivation season. He said Rs. 3 billion has already been allocated for this purpose.
He further stated that compensation would be paid after assessing the damage to all farmland affected by the drought.
