Discussion on Amendments to Domestic Violence Act

A special discussion on amendments required to ensure the more systematic and effective implementation of the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act No. 34 of 2005 was held at the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus.

As the Chairperson of the Caucus, Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj, was unable to attend, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Co-Chairpersons Attorney-at-Law Chamindrani Kiriella and MP Samanmali Gunasinghe at the Parliamentary Complex recently.

The Muslim Women’s Research and Action Forum presented several proposals regarding the proposed new Bill aimed at preventing domestic violence and ensuring prompt legal protection for those affected by it.

Particular attention was given to expanding the powers of individuals and officials who can initiate legal action on behalf of adults and children affected by violence, simplifying the application process, and strengthening follow-up mechanisms relating to interim protection orders and protection orders.

The discussion also emphasized the need for legal and institutional reforms based on the real-life experiences of women affected by domestic violence, rather than limiting the response solely to legislative measures.
