The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has intensified islandwide legal action against the manufacture, import, distribution and sale of motorcycle helmets that do not carry the Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification mark.
Under Extraordinary Gazette No. 1923/65 dated July 16, 2015, all motorcycle helmets manufactured or imported into Sri Lanka must comply with the SLS 517 standard and display the official SLS certification mark.
During a special islandwide inspection conducted on July 27, authorities carried out 98 raids and seized 431 non-SLS certified helmets. The CAA also prohibited the sale of 3,520 helmets produced illegally at two factories during a period when their SLS licences had not been renewed.
From January to June 2026, the CAA filed 53 court cases and seized 87 helmets. Of these, 39 cases have been concluded, while legal proceedings in the remaining 14 cases are continuing.
Overall, the CAA said it has carried out 151 enforcement actions so far in 2026, resulting in the seizure or suspension of sales of more than 4,038 non-compliant helmets.
