The Matara Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued a special order to reactivate and enforce the previous freezing and prohibition orders imposed on a nearly half-acre plot of land and property located in the Browns Hill area of Matara, which has been alleged to belong to former Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
The order was issued by Matara Chief Magistrate Chathura Dissanayake after considering submissions made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) through a motion.
The Magistrate also ordered that any other party claiming a lawful or bona fide ownership interest in the land and property should present their claims before the court within 14 days from yesterday (06).
The court order has been obtained to facilitate further legal action in connection with investigations into the acquisition of illicit assets, while Basil Rajapaksa has not officially claimed ownership of the property as its lawful owner.
The action has been taken in connection with a broader investigation being conducted by the CID under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Assets Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
